Could Sudden Dizziness Indicate Vertigo?

I went to get up yesterday about 7 am to go to church and was so very dizzy I couldn't even stand up. My head was just spinning. It continued yesterday but seems some better today. I am a 72 year old female, very active and in good health, do not smoke or use alcohol. It sounded like vertigo or an inner ear infection but hate to go to the doctor's office with all of the other germs there at this time. I have no cold or congestion so I ruled out the flu. Are there other symptoms with vertigo or ear infections that I should look for or what else could it be? Thanks!
