Could Sharp Pain In Left Lung With Dry Cough Indicate Pleurisy?

Hi there, I think I have pleurisy, sharp pain in my left lung at the side and a dry cough. I am on steroids and antibiotics but I am scared as I am going on holiday in a week and don t want it to get worse. Just want to know more about pleurisy. Is it serious? I had a chest infection for 5 weeks now I have this pain. Will I need to go to the hospital or will it go away with antibiotics? Also as they say you can have fluid in your lungs can I fly safely if I did? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have a chest infection since 5 weeks, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Get Imaging(X-ray, CT, MRI). Required sputum, swab & blood tests done.

In case you fluid(pleural effusion) in the lungs you are suggested not to take a flight. Pleurisy & pleural effusion are treatable, they can go away with medication(oral or intravenous).

Infection can be treated with antibiotic(bacterial), antifungals(fungal). Get treated at the earliest, neglect leads to complications.

In the meantime, avoid addictions if any, take nutritious diet, diet rich in protein & minerals. Take veggies, nuts, fruits & whole grain cereals. Take home made food, avoid packaged oily food from outside.

To get relieve from pain you can take Acetaminophen, one sos when required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K
