Could Mucus Tinged With Pink Blood In Stools Indicate Diverticulitis?

My husband is experiencing mucus tinged with pink colored blood. (never blood red or black stools). He says he has no constipation and bowel movements are normal. He gets a low stomach ache then needs to use the restroom which turns out to be mucus tinged pink. After the first bowel movement and the mucus, if he has to go again there is no mucus or pink tint. He was seen by his dr who prescribed Cipro for 5 days. Dr said could be diverticulitis. He is having a colonoscopy in a couple of weeks but my husband fears he has cancer. Is there any kind of better diagnosis that could ease his fear until test results are shown?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your husband is suffering from mucus tinged pink blood in stool. He has no constipation and bowel movements are normal. Commonly such symptom may be indicative of inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular bleeding, vascular malformation, intestinal infections like viral gastroenteritis, enterocolitis, colon polyp or colon cancer.

You are suggested to get your husband clinically examined by a GP, he will have to get required blood tests (CBC, liver enzymes, tumor markers, etc.), urinalysis, stool examination (R/E and C/S), colonoscopy, CT, proctoscopy, biopsy, etc. He will be accordingly treated. Presently give him home made nutritious food cooked in olive oil. Help him stay at rest. He should avoid stress (physical and emotional).

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
