Could Inflammation In Gums Be Due To Palatal Torus?

I will have a palatal torus surgically removed in a couple of days. Apparently it needed to come out a long time ago, but my previous dentist didn t tell me so. He simply said my gums needed massaging and never connected my gum issues to the tori in my mouth. I told the dentist I ve had sensitive teeth for years and bleeding gums on that one side despite regular brushing and flossing. Massaging the gums and using special toothpaste for sensitivity was his answer. Then he retired. My NEW dentist realized immediately that the inflammation on the roof of the mouth contributed to the inflamed gums and recommended immediate surgery. My question: Why would it not be obvious to one dentist and so very obvious to the other? I ve never looked forward to surgery like this before. I might be able to chew again.

Hi..
Can understand your concern.

As per your complain it is true that a bony palatine torus when get injured while eating or some other reason the mucosa over it gets inflamed and sore and there can be pain and discomfort due to it..

It can cause soreness in the surrounding area and if it is more on one side either right or left nearing the gums it can cause soreness of gums in that area..

But in case of sensitivity and bleeding from gums the reason is not due to bony torus rather it is due to infection in the gums known as GINGIVITIS and this leads to bleeding from the gums and sensitivity.

At times the sensitivity of teeth can be due to loss of enamel layer of teeth or receding gums causing exposure of inner layer of teeth known as dentin and the condition is known as DENTINAL HYPERSENSITIVITY.

Bony torus can cause discomfort and needs to be removed surgically but for bleeding gums and hypersensitivity you need to get treated accordingly by scaling ,antibiotics and gum paint for bleeding and desensitizing toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

You can very well chew after surgery also as the surgical site will heal and need not to worry..

Hope your query is solved..
