Hello I fell off my bike while riding and I am not sure if I it my head or not. I have soreness above my temple which seems have improved each day. I feel like my memory is not as fast as it usually is. Is this common with a head bump, should I be concerned?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Head injury can affect memory if it leads to damage in frontal or temporal area of brain. This type of injury is serious type of head injury. There are alarming signs of serious head injury like
: vomiting
: bleed through ear/nose/throat
: loss of consciousness
: seizures
: onset of focal deficit
If there is no above sign in your case, possibility of mild head injury is more.

Sometimes patient may have memory problem for few days after concussion. It will gradually improve. To fasten the recovery, you should take some rest. Try to keep diary to note important dates and tasks.
Do not strain yourself.
You can play Chess or sudoku games to increase memory power.
Some medicines like citicoline tablets can improve cognition. You can take it after proper prescription.

I think it will help you. Thanks. Take care.

General & Family Physician Dr. Ralph Chambers's  Response
Hello.
Sometimes with a head injury there is what is called retrograde amnesia where one doesn't remember the events leading up to the injury but it sounds like you had a concussion and while that usually resolves in time you should see a doctor for an exam
