Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could Experiencing Shock Waves When Touched Knee Be Due To Nerve Damage Or Cartilage Damage?
About 2 weeks ago I slipped and fell on my right knee. I would say I hit the outside of it hard (full impact of fall). I'm 5'4 and 200lbs so that is some heavy impact to such a small part of my body. I can walk with no issues. Bending it makes popping noises and sometimes the feeling of something being pulled/stretched or moved inside (not quite painful- but just out of the ordinary). The real issue is when I lightly touch a certain small area below my knee (on the front). It sends seriously uncomfortable "shock waves" of pain about an inch or two away to the outside of the knee area. I cannot kneel on this knee at all. There is no pain unless I touch the area myself or my pants or child hits the same area. Pretty sure this painful spot is the impact spot. Is it nerve damage? Cartilage damage? Is it something I really need to have looked at or can this heal on it's own?
Hi I think it is more likely to be anterior cruciate ligament damage than mensci. It is not at all nerve damage. For sure you need to get mri knee to see the vitals structure damage inside. And then consult knee arthroscopist if needed he will do arthroscopy to repair the damaged acl or remove menisci of damaged. If damage is mild can be treated conservatively. Get well soon. Thank you.
