Could Confusion In Mind Be Due To Alcohol Intake While On Mood Stabilizers?
My husband is manic depressed his Dr said he is alcoholic and is giving him a medicine to help with withdrawal. He had a episode today where he could not answer simple questions and very confused. First time this has happened to him. Dr said it was caused by alcohol while taking mood stabilizers. What can I or husband do to help. He is really down right now He is disabled and I don t have a job can t afford to pay for service
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Confusion, abnormal behaviour etc symptoms are seen commonly in bipolar disorders. But some times if a patient take excess amounts of alcohol while on mood stabilisers then they develop symptoms like confusion, irrelevant talking especially while on lithium. This causes electrolyte imbalances. If the symptoms are worsening then consult his doctor and ask for drug change if needed. Ask your husband to quit alcohol.
Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
