Could Bone Shrinkage Be Due To Hypothyroid Condition?

I am 65 and found out I have hypothyroid condition. I have lost 3/4 of an inch in two years but have very strong bone density. Would this cause my shrinking. Also, I have a grandson that is 3 and very short for his age...could he have a thyroid issue like his grandmother?

Hi,

Hypothyroidism can affect bone health in several ways, leading to bone loss and an increased risk of fractures. The thyroid hormone plays a crucial role in bone remodeling, which is a natural process of breaking down old bone tissue and replacing it with new bone tissue. In hypothyroidism, the thyroid hormone levels are low, and this can lead to decreased bone turnover, resulting in bone loss and increased risk of fractures.

It is possible that your shrinking is related to your hypothyroid condition, especially if it is causing bone loss. However, it is important to note that there can be other causes of height loss, such as changes in posture, spinal issues, or other medical conditions. It is best to discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider, who can evaluate your specific situation and determine the underlying cause of your height loss.

Regarding your grandson, children can have thyroid issues, including hypothyroidism. However, it is important to note that short stature can have many causes, and a thorough medical evaluation would be necessary to determine the underlying cause. If you have concerns about your grandson's growth, it would be best to discuss them with his healthcare provider.
