Could Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate Treat Constipation?

Hello, my husband went to the ER with complaints of constipation. He was given a prescription for sodium polystyrene sulfonate, however the pharmacist stated that he had never heard of giving this medication for constipation, was this a wrong prescription?

Hello,

The recommended use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate is in treatment of high blood levels of potassium. It is not recommended in patients with constipation.

I would advise against taking this medication solely to treat constipation. There are several alternative medications that can treat constipation. I would advise you to ask your pharmacist for the best treatment for constipation.

All the best.
