Could Prednisone Prescribed For Back Pain Lead To Increased Heart Rate?

I was prescribed Prednisone 20mg for 4 days for back pain. I took 4 yesterday and then 2 today. My heart feels like it’s going to jump out my chest. Is it the medication that’s causing this. Will a baby aspirin help I’m very concerned as I’ve never had an increased heart rate of 130!! Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Prednisone can increase heart rate as a side effect. This is due to the drug's impact on the body's metabolism, which can cause changes in the levels of certain hormones, such as adrenaline. Other side effects of prednisone can include increased blood pressure and changes in blood sugar levels. It's essential to speak with your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual symptoms while taking prednisone, including an increased heart rate.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
