Could I Have Vitiligo Due To Vitamin Deficiency?

I have been diagnosed with vitligo and I have hypothyroid many years. Only recent aymotom prior to discovery was pain and weakness in legs. After diagnosis I began b-12 vitamjn and also magnesium daily vitamins. Also i changed diet to best of my ability. Noticed recently complete reduction in pain. Could I have vitiligo due to vitamin deficiency? Or would combination with thyroid all these years a huge factor too? I am pre menopausal too

Hello! Your question is quite interesting and yes, it is possible for all as you mentioned to occur. A vitamin B12 deficiency itself can be quite significant as it can cause permanent nerve damage. It is good that you caught it and are being treated. I caution you on being treated with magnesium forever without frequent monitoring. The problems caused by insufficient magnesium in the past may switch to a calcium or vitamin D imbalance later.

Assure you are on a good multivitamin with adequate iodine and selenium for your thyroid. Have you had your vitamin D checked? I would recomend to you if you were my patient to assess vitamin D and calcium status and treat if low separately from a multivitamin and take these in the evening if needed.

Please come visit me again! I hope I answered your question. Good Luck. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
