Child Taken Clindamycin For Staph Infection In Neck. Is It Dangerous To Take After Having EM Minor?

hi my son (7yr) had a staff infection in his neck over the past 4 days. we were in hospital for two nights. they put him on clindamycin via IV with positive results in fever reduction and reduction in the size of the lymph nodes in his neck. we were discharged with 7 days of oral clindamycin and i am now reading horror stories online. Also, my son had a viral reaction while on amoxycillan when he was 2 1/2 that led to EM Minor.
1) Is the clindamycin dangerous to take after having EM Minor? The label reads "don't take if you have had severe skin rashes"
2) Are side affects less likely since he has already been on clindmycin for 2 days via IV?
Thank you for your time. Bret

Hello and welcome to HCM,

Drugs are an important cause of erythema multiforme (EM).
Antibiotics like amoxycillin, ampicillin etc. are known to cause EM.
The appearance of EM rash soon after use of drug (clindamycin).
Since, you have used the drug both orally and by iv route for some time now, it is unlikley that the reaction will occur.
However, you should be careful in future.
Whenever antibiotic is prescribed in future, please ensure to inform your treating doctor for past history of EM.

Thanks and take care
