hello doc, my son is 3-1/2 years old and has got adenoids and feeling very difficult to sleep. we are going to try homeopathy for him since it is safe and reliable method of treatment, but we also know it is slow acting. to manage his problem till then, can we continue nasonex and is there any other medicine that would help him till we meet the doctor during this weekend? can i try giving him steam with some eucalyptus oil to soothen his airways? please reply.

Hello!!

Adenoids is a common problem in this age group. It causes a lot of problem till 7 yrs and then slowly regresses. If there is constant infections then the best treatment for the same is surgery. since your child is small it is better to be conservative in management and steroid nasal sprays are advocated. You can definitely try any home remedies to help him feel better like steam, it is better to be given in the night just before his sleep. Since we are practice Allopathy system of medicine I cant comment on any other form of therapy.

Thanks for writing in.
You can continue with Nasonex and steam but I dont think it will produce significant relief. An anti-histaminic like Benadryl can be used.
The main treatment is surgery which needs to be done as soon as possible. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications.
Please see a ENT surgeon and get it done as soon as possible.
