Child Has Very Hard ,dark Green Stool And Screams Trying To Push It. Recommendations?
Hi! We have a 4 month old son. He has never pooped on a regular shedule. Our pedi told is to supplement with soy instead of regular formula because he has lactose issues. Lately e has had very hard dark green clay like poops that pop out and he screams when trying to push it out. What should we do? Is this normal with soy?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Jay Patel's Response
Infants experiencing dark green stool may be suffering from a lack of intestinal bacteria. If an infant is breast-fed without being given formula it may not have developed bacteria in their digestive system which would normally help break down food. If your infant has only been feeding on one side, they may be missing the breast milk that has a high fat content. This milk assists in the digestion of the breast milk, and its absence can often result in dark green stool. Children who have been prescribed a clear liquid diet may also develop green or watery stools as their body reacts to the lack of solid food in their diet.
In order to avoid harding of stool proper hydration needs to be provided , if still problems persisted ask pedi to provide laxative or u can try using castor oil at home.
