Child Has Type 1 Diabetes. Appetite Is Less. Urine Shows Trace-small Ketones. Breath Smells Rubber. Treatment?

My 6 year old son has type 1 diabetes. Recently his hunger has greatly deminished (about 1/4 of what he had been eating), his urine shows trace-small ketones, and we are trying to push fluids. However, the most unusual change is that his breath smells really strange...not at all sweet, almost like plastic or rubber. Any thoughts on what might be happening?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Fruity sweet smell is usually associated with ketosis.

But the different smell from his breath could be local problems like oral, dental problems.

Ask him to maintain good oral hygiene with regular brushing.

Continue insulin as advised for diabetes.

Consult the doctor for local examination to check his oral cavity for any local problems.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
