Child Has Acidity. Taking Lanzol. Is The Drug Safe?

Hi

My son 10 yrs is frequently suffering with acidity on and off for the past 6 months. He is a bit sensitive to food spicy foods, mango, papaya, egg etc. He suddenly feels hungry though he had food only half an hour ago and can't wait to eat food. Doctor prescribed Lanzol junior 30 for 15 days. My question is that is this drug safe, as it inhibits the acid production in the stomach. Will there be any side effects on liver or after discontinuing the drug. Kindly advise.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi there, Acidity as you call it ,has become a common problem in the children around the world. The cause is usually the lifestyle and type of food consumed.Your child is an not an exception. These patients are usually prescribed antacids and drugs that inhibit acid secretion in stomach and Lanzol (lansoprazole) is one such medication. The drug has a good safety profile and side effects are rare .Liver dysfuncton is almost unkown or remote. Lest it is advisable to use the drug only for brief periods.Changing the food type(less spicy) and having at regular intervals abates the problem. If Symptoms increase or recur, further investigation may be required.
