Child Faught With Siblings. Painful Little Lump In The Bone Behind The Ear. No Fever. Advice

Hi my son who is 5 and a half complained of pain behind his ear but only when he touched it. On inspection , I have felt a little lump which is soft but he says very painful when touched. It is in the bone in line with the top of his ear. He was fighting with his brother in the bath so I am unsure if it was knocked in the process or hit , but he didn t mention it at the time . He has no temperature or any other symptoms .

Hello dear,

The bump behind the ear is due to accumulation of fluid or blood (hematoma).
And the pain can be attributed to the inflammatory response due to the injury.
The pain and swelling will gradually decrease as the inflammatory response subsides.
But this is a slow process & takes times to disappear completely.

Till that time, symptomatic relief is obtained by giving analgesics, ice compression & adequate rest.

However, if the swelling still persists or associated with symptoms such as high grade fever, vomiting, dizziness, loss of consciousness, convulsions, etc. then it will be better to consult a Neurophysician.
Investigations like X ray & CT scan of the brain will be helpful to rule out any intra cranial pathology.

There is no need to worry, he will be fine.

Wishing him a good health.
Thanks & take care.
