Hi I am Dr.kadhir,

There are quite a number of conditions which presents with constipation, starting from a small ulcer in the anal region to some serious bowel diseases but the most common one being habitual constipation . My advice is to first rule out all other serious causes, as your child has faltering weight, loss of appetite and pale stools .

At the same time it is important to treat for constipation. Chronic constipation can lead to abdominal pain, nutritional deficiency, rectal prolapse and psychological stress. The drugs that are recommended are :

Movicol (macrogol or polyethylene glycol ) is an laxative which softens the stools by increasing its water content . Its quite safe and effective only when used properly (adequate dose and method). Method of preparing the drug and number of sachets are more important.
The side effects are quite rare, mainly due to dehydration , loss of electrolytes and over dose.

Movicol can be used for short term and then proper fiber diet (fruits and vegetables), adequate water and lactulose can be used. Lactulose dose can be increased cautiously ( to avoid major side effects) till satisfactory respose is obtained.

When child is on these drugs, he should be monitored and it is advised to get these drugs with prescription.

It is difficult to comment on treating the child with vormex . Treatment with vormex wont be effective, unless there is strong evidence of worm infestation as the reason for constipation (can occur due to intestinal obstruction , but it is quit uncommon for worms to cause such serious complication) .

It is better to consult a pediatric gastroenterologist or pediatrician who can spend some time in evaluating your child.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Vormox contains mebendazole and it should be given orally for 3 days in prescribed dose.

It is not a local application medication.

When it is take orally, it will pass through the gut and kill the worms inside the gut.

Coming to his constipation, you should give him dietary fiber rich food like vegetables, fruits, and green leafy vegetables.

Oral laxatives such as lactulose can be given in prescribed dose for 3 to 5 days to make stool soft.

For the rash around the anus you can apply a bland ointment containing zinc oxide.

Consult the doctor for examination and for prescription of medication.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
