Can Wine Be Consumed While On Brisdelle?

Can you enjoy small amounts of wine while taking Brisdelle ? Does this medicine help with mood swings and being able to not feel overwhelmed ? I was taken off of hormones and am experiencing menapause symptoms - AGAIN. I am having difficulty sleeping and feel overwhelmed, anxious and emotional. I will be starting on tomoxifen soon.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
It is not safe to consume wine while on Brisdelle.

Brisdelle (Paroxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor which is commonly prescribed in the treatment of major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety and other conditions.

Taking alcohol or alcohol containing beverages such as wine along with Brisdelle may increase side effects such as dizziness, excessive drowsiness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, impaired thinking, judgement, and motor incoordination which may result in falls and injuries.

For the sleep disturbances you may consult your treating doctor for possible use of a short acting benzodiazepine such as Temazepam or Alprazolam at bedtime.

Hope this will be helpful in getting proper sleep.
