Can Vaccination Be Administered When Treated For Hydrea In A Patient With Polycythemia Vera?
I had earlier read in some literature that if you have polycythemia vera or essential thrombosis, you are over 65, and you are treated with Hydrea , you should not get any vaccines. I cannot find that literature again and wonder if you have any reference to this information?
Hello and welcome to HCM, There is no contraindication to the use of any vaccine in patients above 65 years suffering from polycythemia vera. The disease - polycythemia vera can be managed with drugs i.e. hydrea and phelebotomy and vaccines can be administered without any deleterious effect if the disease is well controlled. Thus, there is nothing to worry but keep your hematologist well informed before taking any vaccine.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
