Can Thyroid Problem Cause Depression?

Hi My daughter is suffering from depression and seems to find little therapeutic relief from her medication. She has lived a happy life and we cannot attribute her depression to any significant trauma. She was a diligent student and was Head Girl in her final year of school. My father suffered from thyroid problems and I wonder if her thyroid could be the cause? Is it true that depression can be linked to thyroid functioning?

Hello thanks for choosing HCM for your health related queries

Your father has history of thyroid disorder and your daughter has depression. Thyroid problems especially hypothyroidism can be a reason behind her depression. Hypothyroidism is one of common co-morbid condition associated with depression. It is no necessary that depression occurs after some significant life trauma. It occurs because of contribution of genetic, environmental, psychological and biochemical factors. Depression can be controlled if proper treatment is taken from a psychiatrist. For hypothyroidism thyroxin is commonly used. For treatment of depression medicines like Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Escitalopram etc are used. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
