Can The Loud Ringing Sound In Ears Be Due To Experiencing A Loud Sound?

Hi, I went shooting three days ago and I normally wear earplugs but forgot when I was shooting a .22 caliber rifle. It misfired or the bullet had a problem, I m not sure, but the power exploded in the gun. From then until now I ve had loud ringing in my ear. I though after a day or two it would leave but I would like to know if I should see a doctor now that it s going on three days. Thanks.

Hi,

Noted your history of shooting with .22 caliber rifle without ear plugs and unfortunately the bullet misfired, large sound, now the ringing in the ears continues.
As per the history you have provided the misfire caused very loud sound and since the source was so near the ear, the sound wave caused direct trauma to the hair-cells responsible for this particular sound and now these are continuously moving to give you hte feeling of the same sound.
Hence you should consult your Doctor to get a reference for an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, investigations of the cochlear apparatus by Audiometry, CT scan and whichever would be advised.
The treatment will obviously be as per the cause found.
Till then avoid loud sounds.
Stop smoking.
No not instill anything in ears.
Do not blow nose.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
