Question on low dose aspirin. I have blood work done every year. A year ago I had 1-5 for RBC and 1-5 WBC in my urine analysis. This year I had 3-5 for RBC and normal (neg) WBC. All other items are normal. Other than vitamins the only medications I take are 81mg of aspirin and have been taking 15mg of meloxicam for arthritis. Can the aspirin cause hematuria? Thanks, Bob Jameson
Hello This year RBCs increased in your urine examination , that is abnormal . As you mentioned that you are taking low dose aspirin (81 mg ) / day . As you know that this is anticoagulant , so increases bleeding time and this may be the reason of RBCs in the urine .( however , doses are low but may be be responsible for bleeding ). You mentioned in the query that you are also taking meloxicam for arthritis . Meloxicam is NSAIDs and it interact with aspirin and also increase the anticoagulant effect of aspirin , so this may be the reason of RBCs in urine . 3rd reason may be calculus in urinary tract system . Diagnosis can be confirmed by ultrasound of renal system. However, there are so many other reasons , like uti , etc but in my opinion consult an urologist and get his opinion. Good luck.
