I had an amalgam filling put into a lower first molar (2 surface) this morning. It broke on my way to work from the dentist. Is it possible the amalgam wasn't mixed properly? This office doesn't usually do amalgams, so maybe they're out of practice, so to speak? If it is replaced, does the entire filling have to be removed or can a mechanical bond be made by undercutting the prep?
Silver amalgam fillings are an outdated concept probably earlier days with no other alternative available. You must also understand it mechanically interlocks with the tooth unlike modern day composite restorations which bond to the tooth directly. Wise option would be to replace with a composite restoration.
