Can Swollen Hands And Pain At The Joints And Back Indicate RA?

My hands are swollen and hurt at the joints. I frequently drop things. They are in pain and I can t straighten my right index finger! My physician just referred me to a rheumatologist.... (I also have severe lower back pain scoliosis, bulging disc, and 2 dehydrated dics) does this mean he thinks I could have RA? I rarely sleep well but I am so tired all the time!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pain at the joints & swelling associated with pain is indicative of RA. Get blood tests for RA done to confirm diagnosis. The tests include RF, anti CCP, CRP, ESR, ANA, HLA tissue typing etc. You are suggested to do hand exercises (eg. knitting) & stretch exercises to help joints become flexible & for pain reduction. Do exercises under a physiotherapist. You can take NSAIDS(Naprxen or Combiflam), one SOS when required for pain relieve.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
