Can Swelling And Pain In The Ankle Be A Sprain Or A Fracture?

I injured my ankle yesterday. There is no bruising and slight swelling. The swelling is on the front part of the ankle. It hurts to move it side to side or to stand on it. I am able to walk on it but there is a constant burning sensation along with a feeling of numbness. I couldn't sleep last night due to the pain. Is this a sprain or could this be broken?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thanks for asking to HCM. Severe Pain not relieved by analgesics and swellling may indicate fracture. Follow these things
1. rest your foot for 1 week (no sports)
2. Apply ice for swelling and pain
3. Take some good analgesics (Tab Hifenac D 1-0-1 for 3 days)
4. Elevate foot while sleeping (keep pillow under the foot)

After doing all these things your pain and swelling are not subsiding, its better to consult orthopedician and he may suggest an X ray for diagnosis and futher action. Regards
