Can Strong Smell Of Bleach Have Any Effect On A Newborn Baby?

Hi, I realised today that we have a spot of black mould on the wall near the window in the bedroom where we and our 4 week old baby sleep. I cleaned it with bleach cleaner today and now the whole rooms smells strongly of bleach and I m worried about putting my baby to sleep in the room tonight. Should I be concerned for her or our health?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It has been tested in research that exposure of smell of bleach may lead to many respiratory illness in children. However, it hold true for frequent exposures. It doesn't matter in 1-2 bleaches. So, its perfectly fine and you need not to worry. However, for future I suggests sticking to soap and warm water as opposed to bleach, as it may often do the trick just as well. For scrubbing floors or sinks, use baking soda to really get the gritty dirt out of the cracks. And vinegar mixed with water is a good glass cleaner.

Hope it answers your question. Good luck. Enjoy parenthood. Vaccinate your baby for preventable diseases.
