Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Poison Ivy Cause Rashes All Over Body And Swollen Eyes?
I have a reaction to poison ivy which includes significant rash all over and very swollen eyes. Doctor has prescribed prednisone 5mg 8 tablets per day for 3 days plus reactine. Will this do the trick? I am also worried about what I am reading regarding side effects, particularly more swelling in the face and rapid weight gain. What are your thoughts?
Weight gain can occur with oral steroids but only if they have to be used consistently over long periods eg persons with chronic illnesses that require steroid use for weeks or months. It will not affect your weight if used for only a few days.
In terms of the swelling of the face, again this is only after prolonged use.
You can safely use for the short period prescribed. The prescription of steroids for severe allergic reaction is normal treatment.
I hope this helps
