Can Plaquenil Cause Yeast Infection,how Can I Treat It,and Is It Harmful Take Plaquenil Along With Diflucan?

Dr, I have been diagnosed with sjogrens and they put me on hydroxychlor 200mg which is the generic for plaquenil and I have been on it for a month now . And Pilocarpine 5mg which is generic for salagen as needed. And I have only taking this medicine 2 times. I am now having a white discharge. Can plaquenil cause yeast infections? What should I do? I took a diflucan last night that I had before I was ever diagnosed from when I was on antibiotics one time and found out from the web sites that you shouldn t take plaquenil with diflucan. HELP

Hi,

First, the yeast infection is not a complication of Plaquenil rather it is due to Sjogren's in which yeast infections are common and Plaquenil reduces the risk of yeast infection in such patient.

Now about the drug interaction of Plaquenil and Diflucan, an FDA study done shows that there takes place an interaction between these two drugs by causing the effect on the heart. They cause irregular heartbeats which can sometimes be fatal if not treated.

So if your doctor prescribed you this two medicine he must be aware of this and must be following your treatment. If you find our abnormal heartbeat you must call your doctor and then he may give you further advice for your treatment.

For now, you should continue with your treatment and don't stop or change the dose without your doctor advice.
