Can Pins Poking In A Bennett Fracture Be Treated?

Hello! I fractured the first metacarpal (bennet fracture) and recieved surgery two weeks ago. They put two pins through the base of the joint and put a cast on it. I am scheduled to have the pins removed in 4 days. Sadly, I am stuck at a weird situation. It feels like one of the pins are trying to poke through the top of my hand. I decided to shine my flash light down the cast ( made sure not to stick anything in it) and spotted a bump where i feel the pain. It is one of the pins. I m not sure if this is normal or if i should go to the ER.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Actually once the pins are planning within the fractured segment (to help approximation of broken bones & healing) plaster cast is put to immobilize the broken bones. Once immobilized, there is less chance of pin poking the bone through & through. Pain ought to be there in fracture till it gets healed.

The rare possibility of displacement can be excluded by consulting your treating orthopedic surgeon. Simple X-ray would clear the picture.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
