Can Pigmentation On Lips Be Cancerous?

I have developed loss of pigment in some areas of my lower lip/ Was checked for lip cancer. Not that. Was concerned because I have had 5 basal and squamous so far. Stated not cancer. Could cold sores of the lips when gone, leave these types of areas? Have had many since my teens. Am now 59. The color of the lower lip never returns to normal tone!

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,

I can understand your concern for the lip pigmentation and any associated cancer with this pigmentation.
Let me reassure you first that pigmented lips are not related to any skin cancer so do not worry about the same. It is quite common genetical or due smoking to get dark pigmented lips.

I suggest my patients to apply a cream containing Kojic acid or Licorice extract at night time. It takes around 8-12 weeks to see the results.
Use of sunscreen lip balm can be applied to prevent the further darkening. Eat healthy diet containing lot of vitamins and minerals.

I reassure you again that pigmentation of lips is not a sign of skin cancer.

All the best.
