Can Painful Knots In The Head Be Related To Some Old Head Injury ?

My mother in law got hit in the head with a blunt object almost 5 years ago. Yesterday 2 knots came up on her head where she hit. She says they are painfull and tender to the touch. She s wanting to know if the knots have anything to do with the previous injury or if its something else altogether

Hi, My name is Vin. I'm sorry to hear about your Mother in law.

From what i understand.. these painful knots have popped up recently. while the blunt injury to the head happened 5 years ago.

I have a couple of questions that might help shed some light on the problem

First off.. Where there any lumps or painless knots in the region of the injury prior to yesterdays pain? Where the knots present but painless? Or was there nothing worth mentioning at all over there until yesterday?

If the knots were there and they've just gotten painful... there's a small possibility that they've gotten infected or irritated. It's still not really related to the injury from 5 years ago, but still you've got to make sure Mom doesn't go picking at them. If that pain is associated with a fever.. please get Mom to her doctor right away. If there is no fever.. i'd adopt a 'wait and watch' kind of approach. If the pain goes away over the next day or 2.. great. If not, call your doctor and make an appointment.

If there was nothing there over the last 5 years and the KNOTS are new.. then I'm pretty sure the old injury and this have no relation at all and I'm very sure mom needs to see her doctor sooner rather than later.

Overall I'd be very skeptical of a 5 year old scalp injury causing problems for a patient at this point.. but there is a remote slight possibility. I'm resonably sure you can wait and watch.. but if those knots grow or the pain doesn't let up.. Please make an appointment to see your primary or head for the nearest clinic or ER.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any further questions.

Vin
