Can Painful Bruising On The Lower Back After An Injury Be Treated?

Hi, my husband fell down the stairs and landed straight on his back (he broke his back in 5 different places previously in the same spot he hit) this past sunday night and has had a hard time twisting and turning and raising his arm. He just noticed today a spot on his lower right back that majority of the pain in coming from. Should he go back to the doctor?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

All the symptoms you have mentioned here suggestive of a harmless condition called hematoma. It is similar to bruises and it develops due to collection of blood following a blunt trauma. You don't need to worry regarding this as it will goes away by its own even with out treatment.
There is no need to visit a doctor as of now.
You can try the following as an initial management:-
(1)- If he has pain, you can use simple analgesics like ibuprofen or diclofenac.
(2)- Apply ice packs to the affected area,it will helps in faster recovery.
(3)- Complete bed rest is advised, immobilize the affected part,
(4)- Over the counter creams like DFO gel can be tried for pain.
If symptoms persist despite all these or there is any increase in size of the swelling, please consult a doctor.

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.
