Can Norovirus Infection Cause Impaired Memory?

A 14 year old boy who s maintained a perfect grade point average throughout his entire school years, was hospitalized after being infected with the norovirus. Since then, his grades have been spiraling downward and no one can figure out why? Is it possible that the severe nature of his illness, might have caused damage to brain tissue, affecting his cognitive abilities?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello,

Norovirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis in the USA. However, it does not cause neurological symptoms.
Below is a list of some causes of mental deterioration:
-brain tumor
-head injury
-domestic problems
-bullying
-hypothyroidism
-drugs(including those of addiction)
-epilepsy
A neuropsychologist would be able to perform cognitive testing which could be of benefit.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr.Arnold Zedd,
