Hi, Syphilis can cross the placenta and infect the fetus from about 14 weeks’ gestation, and the risk of fetal infection increases with gestational age. When syphilis is diagnosed during the second half of pregnancy, management should include a sonographic fetal evaluation for congenital syphilis. However, this evaluation should not delay the therapy. Sonographic signs of fetal or placental syphilis (i.e., hepatomegaly, ascites, hydrops, fetal anemia, or a thickened placenta) indicate a greater risk for fetal treatment failure. So get the scanning done for the above findings and check for syphilis in new born by amniotic fluid sampling etc. If any test is positive, then please consult your gynecologist immediately otherwise a bad outcome is expected.
