Can Myelodysplastic Syndrome Be Inherited?

Hi! Can MDS be inherited? I have low platelet count for years, noone ever paid attention to it. I am slightly concerned as more and more often I have shortness of breath. Would a simple blood test pick it up? I have had one in october. Thanks in advance

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

MDS can be inherited but the chances are low. A simple blood test may indicate towards MDS but a definitive diagnosis requires more comprehensive tests like flow cytometry, marrow examination and cytogenetics.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
