Can Moldy Drywall Cause Health Hazards?

If one is exposed to moldy drywall in their basement, can one have life long health issues? My daughter has been living with her boyfriend, now fiancé since earlier this year and I thought they had gotten rid of their moldy stuff in the basement where they moved into, but I just found out they haven t yet. We plan to help them get rid of this moldy drywall asap, but wondering if one can have health affects from what they have been breathing in up to now? Thanks, Donna Mallmann

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

This can be problematic for some, especially those with atrophy. It can cause allergic manifestations like allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, watery eyes), allergic rhinitis (itchy, water, stuffy nose) or recurrent cough / wheezing. Very rarely, can also cause fungal infection of sinus / lungs (aspergillosis). So better to clean without much delay.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
