Can Meth Addiction Cause Bladder Cancer?

I have a female friend who is 40. She has been a heavy drinker (1L) per day when she stopped last month and meth addict for 25 of the last 30 years. She has a lesion on her bladder. She is going for a CT scan Friday.I was reading on risk factors and Paint, chemicals, etc increasing Bladder Cancer Risk- I know meth is made up of terrible chemicals and was wondering if any clinical connection between bladder cancer and meth use had been studied and if so what were the results ?

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's condition. Although, aside from being white and over 40, smoking is the number one cause of bladder cancer, other causes include radiation, parasitic infections AND exposure to chemicals. Since your friend has been using meth from decades, it is very possible that the cause of her bladder cancer is exposure to chemicals contained in meth. These chemicals cause chronic bladder inflammation, leading to cancer.

Wishing you and your friend the best.
