Can Kids Get Bipolar Disorder If There Is Family History?

Hello,
My fiance's brother has been diagnosed with bipolar. His two aunts and grandmother on his mom's side also have bipolar. His dad's side also has a history of bipolar. My fiance's mom and dad do not have bipolar. My fiance himself is healthy.

I am also healthy and don't have any family history of mental illnesses.
Can you please tell me, what are the chances of our kids having bipolar disorder? Because my fiance and me are both healthy but my fiance's family has a history of the disease.

Thank you

hello thanks for writing to hcm.
yes its true that bipolar disorder is known to have hereditary inheritence.
it is bipolar type 2 disorder thats more common amongst sround 40%of first degree relatives and bipolar type 1 disorder in around 20% of first degree relatives .
I suggest you to go for genetic counselling before marriage.
Take care.
