Can Increased Dosage Of Risperidone Be Taken For Severe Depression?

Hello, I am presently on 450 mg of Wellbutrine and 1 mg of Risperidone daily. I have had depressive episodes since I was a teenager, and am now 55. These usually lasted a week then I would go on a bender. I always abused alcohol and pot ( 16 yrs old )+ occasionally any other drug available and affordable. Got married , had 3 great children and stopped the heavy drug use but not drinking or pot. Still had depressive episodes, almost monthly, sometimes affecting work and always the family...BUT nothing was wrong. Found out hidden info about my wife and 2 1/2 years ago and sank into a blackness I couldn t shake. Was sent to a psychiatrist after a 4 month wait and he tried me on diff drugs until settling on these. They seemed to help me stop thinking each day about suicide but I was wasting away and sick all the time (for 1 year) Was told I had to confront my wife and I did so. (Met her when she was 17 and was living together for 8 yrs. and then married for 25. Found out 2 1/2 yrs ago , she gave up a baby for adoption when she was 13) When confronted she didn t apologize and just stated it was none of my business ,suddenly I was the cause of every problem in the world and she hadn t been happy for many years and walked out 6 days later and didn t speak a word to me in 2 years. I tried everything for reconciliation but still not a word. Wasn t mad about the child, just the fact she covered it up and didn t confide in me. After she left, I found out no one including her sisters, friends and my kids knew anything was wrong. Our court trial for divorce is Jan.3, 2017 and although I have been fairly good these past 2 years, I am now filled with great anxiety and depression again. I seem to be at my original depressive state. My Psychiatrist retired 6 months ago and I would have to go on a waiting list, then regurgitate all this again. My family Dr. does not deal with this type of medication and refers to the Psychiatrist . Sorry about the long run up but thought a little back ground may help. Question : Can I increase my dosage of riperidone to 2-3 mg a day until this hell is over with? My Psychiatrist diagnosed a bi-polar disorder, but couldn t be sure unless he talked to my wife. I have read up on the medication and I think an increased dose could help me in the short term. What is your advice?

Hi,

Although there is a role of Risperidone in severe depression, it is used in very low dose for depression. It is basically not a drug for depression but in low doses may potentiate the effect of anti-depressent like Wellbutrin.

The dose of Risperidone studied for depression is up to 2 mg, though it is started very low and only increased if needed. So taking your question, you can increase the dose to 1.5 and then 2 mg (maximum) gradually if needed. However I understand this should be done by consultation and advice of your doctor.

You should also focus on mind relaxation techniques and exercises to fight these hard times of mishaps.

Hope I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this.
