Can I Consume Soda/aerated Drinks For GERD?

Hi Doc,Aged 30, 5'6",47 kg wt,working as a software engineer.Recently diagnosed with GERD.Tried avoiding foods that cause gastritis. But still after every two weeks I get GERD. I feel like mouth is dry, sometimes result in high BP. Last night I had difficulty in breathing. Bowel movements are perfect. Irrespective of GERD I pass stools once a day. Please let me know why this episode repeats. Can I consume soda/aerated drinks as I read that the bicarbonate can help escape the gas from stomach?

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

If diet does not help with GERD symptoms, you should be prescribed with PPIs medicines (proton pump inhibitors). Please note that untreated GERD can lead to esophagus inflammation and even a cancer.
Breathing problems are most likely caused by asthma which very often associates GERD. To diagnose it, spirometry needs to be done.
Generally soda/carbonated drinks are not contraindicated in case of GERD so if you feel them helping you.
Just remember to avoid fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol. coffee, fruit juices, chocolate.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
