Can Hives Swelling Lead To Thyroiditis?

I have been told that I have a thyroiditis but do not have an actual name for it yet. I am told my thyroid is going to burn out. I was diagnosed with autoimmune (hives, swelling) about 15 years ago and now it has found it's way to my thyroid. Is that possible? How long does my thyroid have?

Hi,

This is the normal course of autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis). You develop antibodies initially and then gradually it will cause destruction of thyroid cells leading to hypothyroidism. It is not predictable as when you will develop hypothyroidism and you should start treatment.

Roughly 3-5% of patients with autoimmunity will develop hypothyroidism every year. So i would suggest you to do your thyroid function tests every year and start treatment when your TSH is above normal.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

With warm regards,

Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM)
Consultant Endocrinologist.
