Can Hit On Head Be Dangerous?

I hit my head today at work (on the top of my head) when I stood up from kneeling down and there was a low doorway that I apparently did not clear in time. Since it has hurt in a throbbing way to bend over if my head is downward, and also to chew even just a soft macaroni. Should I be worried? What can I do?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. This typical injury mode is usually non dangerous except in elderly (>60 years), in whom it can later on give rise to chronic subdural hematoma. So if you are young do not worry much.

The tender swelling at injury site is normal. It occurs due to inflammation and blood collection in scalp layers in response to injury. The pain even on moving jaw is due to movement of muscle and sometimes skin, which move this injuried sensitive scalp layer and generates pain. On bending forward, pain occurs due to increase in swelling and blood flow towards swelling area. So it is normal.

You need to worry if any of below sings present
: vomiting
: loss of consciousness
: decreasing consciousness
: onset of new focal deficit
: bleed through nose/ear/throat
: memory disturbance
: progressively increasing headache
Consult ER as soon as possible if any of above signs appears.

Meanwhile at home, you can follow few tips
: Apply icepacks
: You can take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after prescription.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care.
