Can Genital Herpes Spread Without Contact With Herpetic Lesion?

Hey, so my brother recently got diagnosed with genital herpes. I have a few like acne spots by my mustache and I have 1 spot on my penis but it doesn’t look like herpes more like a pimple. He doesn’t have oral herpes but would it be possible for him to someone give it to me without any contact? I can send pictures, thanks.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Herpes simplex virus infection of the genitals usually spreads through direct contact with infected surfaces like skin to skin contact during sexual intercourse. Though rare, but there is a possibility of genital to skin spread through contaminate hands if the infectious fluids/secretions are transferred from active lesions on infected genital surfaces to extragenital sites like eyes, oral mucosa/lips etc but generally this is quite rare because the virus does not survive outside the body and dies quickly on exposure to air.

Regards.
