Can Fluid Retention In The Body Aggravate Dementia?

I have an 88 year old aunt who is retaining fluid......doctor thinks congestive heart failure......can this cause an increase in dementia? She has very slight dementia, but since the onset of the fluid retention, she has gotten much worse mentally. Are the two connected?

Hi,

Fluid retention does not directly affect on memory areas of brain and to cause worsening of dementia. However, fluid retention could cause over-hydration of brain cells and might contribute to certain central nervous symptoms like headache, confusion and drowsiness.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
