Can Febuxostat Be Taken As Prescribed For Kidney Even Though Having Several Allergies?

My Dad is 79 and he has a GFR of 30. He saw his kidney specialist today who said he could take febuxostat. I noticed there was a caution with those with renal disease. My Dad is severly allergic to allopurinal and has had 1 gout flare up every 6 weeks despite abstaining from all alcohol and limiting red meat. These have been treated with colchicine. He is otherwise doing fairly well except for needing synthroid and has had a recent knee replacement. Can he safely take febuxostat?

Thanks for writing on HCM.
I were to adjust the dose of Febuxostat in your case since you are having a moderate renal impairment. Most of the studies on Febuxostat have not involved patients who were allergic to allopurinol. So we cannot be sure if its really safe. However test for allergy will confirm the same.
Hope this helps.
