Can Exercise Be Done After Fractured Radius And Ulna?

Hello, I am a 23 year old male. Three weeks ago, Dec 17, I had H/O fall on my outstretched arm while playing. I suffered closed fracture radius and ulna, left. I got surgery done on Dec 18 .The treatment is as follows, Open reduction+7H DCP to Ulna/Open reduction+5H recon plate fixation to Radius (under brachial block). Doctor says it would take 3 months. I am worried whether it will be normal again. Will I be able to do exercises like push ups or weightlifting again? When can I get those plates off? Will the forearm be fine if I get the plates removed after 2 years? Do I have to keep those plates for life?

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
Hi im dr.hema physiotherapist

The major problem after an elbow fracture is stiffness of the same.
Sometimes, this stiffness persists long after the fractured bones have healed.

Therefore, its important to start physical therapy soon after injury to help introduce early motion to your healing elbow.Your physical therapist may work with you to help you regain normal use of your elbow and arm.

In ORIF the muscles are involved it takes 12 weeks and in mean time u need to avoid DISUSE atropy of muscles by strengthening
1 . shoulder
2.wrist muscles
Discuss with ur doctor the amount you can use your arm and when you can start using it will depend on the condition of your elbow and what limits you may have.

You can reduce soreness after exercise by putting ice on the joint but not directly with a cloth in between ur skin and ice, as elbow z very sessitive joint.
After 2nd week, you may be able to use your splint only while sleeping. Ask your doctor if this okay. You will need to avoid carrying anything or pulling items even when your splint is off.
By 6 weeks, you should be able to slowly increase daily activities to help make your elbow and arm stronger.Do not lift anything heavier than 1-2 pounds when you do your exercises. Ask your doctor or physical therapist how much you can lift. You may also need to do shoulder wrist exercise as mentioned.
By 12 weeks, you should be able to lift more weight. Ask your doctor what other activities you can do at this point.Make sure you know the proper way to use your elbow before you start any activity or move your arm for any reason.

Because each progression is very important.main goal z to regain elbow range by stretching and range exercises then strengthening.

Ask your doctor if you can:
Lift things heavier than 10 to 15 lbs for the rest of your life.
Play golf or tennis, or throw objects (such as a ball) for the rest of your life
Do any activities that make you lift your elbow over and over shooting basketballsand activities like boxing where physical activities that need quick stop and start motions or twisting with your elbow.

Most people who undergo elbow surgery resume a normal lifestyle within four months based on the severity of the condition, as each differs and surgeon has to take decisions.

All the best, wish u speedy recovery.

In doubt do ask.
