Can Discontinuing Topiramate Prevent Headaches From Occurring While Recovering From Cerebrovascular Accidents?

I suffered a stroke on 12/25/16 and another on 1/5/17. After that I had headaches from time to time and the Dr. prescribed topiramate (50 mg.) I stopped taking the medication several weeks ago and have had no headaches since then. I abhor taking drugs and am concerned about over-medication. Is there any danger to me from deleting this medication from my daily regimen?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

From what I understand Topiramate has been prescribed to prevent headaches and not for seizure prevention (another possible use for it). In that case the worst that could happen would be headaches reappearing. So if you mean something serious like having another stroke or any other complication with permanent consequences that is not the case, you are under no such risk. Since you have been symptom free for weeks after interrupting it now I wouldn't start it again.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
