Can Depression Relapse Affect The Future Of A New Relationship?

Hi, I am Abinash. I am just involved in a relationship and wanna to convert that to marriage. Last night i came to know that she went through a depression for around 1 month some 8-9 months ego. And she consulted a local psychiatrist and was in treatment for 4 months. After that she is not taking any pills and she is perfect now (Note- She think this and i believe her). The reason she said is, her marriage was heading for divorce and because of this she had a depression. And now she is ready for a 2nd life. She also clarified that nobody in her family has history of depression. I have not meet her yet and going to meet in the coming week. We have seen each other through web cam and liked each other. She is now working as a HR and admin professional from past 1 month. This will also be my 2nd marriage if we decide to go ahead. I am bit worried and disturbed after hearing abt her depression. So i would like to know, if there is any chance she may get into depression again in future if some serious problem comes as u know there is ups and downs in married life? Will this affect our relationship in future? Will she be able to conceive? If she conceives, Will that affect our kids? Lastly would like take a suggestion, should i go ahead with this marriage?

Hello thanks for choosing HCM for your health related queries

I have read your query and I can understand your concern. Depression is a mood disorder and it occurs in episodes. She developed depression due to her problems of marital life and so most likely she was suffering from Adjustment Disorder with depression. Any episode increases the risk of depression in future but as she was having adjustment disorder so the risk if very low.

Slight sensitivity to rejection, emotional lability may be seen in her but whether it will affect your relationship can't be commented with certainty.

Yes she will be able to conceive and there is no risk on that.

As per my opinion if she had adjustment disorder then the risk to your kids is very low. Theoretically there is increased risk of depression in kids but that is not so significant.

This depends upon your personal choice and as per my opinion she is not seriously ill and if she suits your personal an emotional life you can go ahead with this marriage.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
