Hello,

Combining alcohol with Valproic Acid can certainly impact one's sleeping pattern. These are both central nervous system depressants, although they work by different mechanisms in the brain. Both of these chemical increase a chemical referred to as GABA in the brain and this causes a sedative effect. Combining the two chemicals will undoubtedly lead to side effects, such as disrupted sleep patterns, daytime sleepiness and over the long term, changes in neurochemicals that results in muscle twitches and a significantly disrupted sleep pattern.

I strongly advise that he alcohol use be reduced and hopefully tapered off. I have had similar patients that combined these chemicals and overdose can occur with high levels of either drug reducing a patient's breathing rate and causing severe problems

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
